The Facts. All The Facts
The internet market is one of the most dangerous ones to try to step in to for companies. A general rule of thumb is: “If people like it, somebody is going to pirate it”. This can clearly be seen in the 2009 movie Star Trek, the most popular film of that year, which was illegally downloaded from the internet 11 million times. An easy way to put that number into perspective is to take the population of Ohio, and have about 95% of those people all illegally download that one movie. The same fate befell the most popular television show of the same year, Heroes, which had an average episode viewing of 5.9 million viewers, while the most pirated episode of that years’ season was pirated 6.6 million times. Looking on a more global scale, the amount of revenue lost in 2010 to illegal downloads on the internet comes out to approximately 25 billion US dollars.
